Tips for Preventing Your Pets from Damaging Furniture

One thing’s for certain, the good people of Murfreesboro love their pets! And as a professional carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning business, we know those fur-babies keep us in business! But we’re homeowners too, and we don’t want our customers spending lots of money on upholstery cleaning and carpet cleaning, outside of their regular maintenance schedule. Here are a few tips to help keep your furniture looking good, and keep your pets from being banished to the garage.

Give Your Pets Acceptable Things to Chew or Scratch

You can discourage your pets from chewing or scratching your furniture by providing them with acceptable alternatives. If your dog chews out of anxiety or boredom while you’re away, you can confine him to the kitchen or another room of the house that doesn’t contain furniture. Give him bones or toys to chew on so he won’t be tempted to go after the furniture. If you have a cat that routinely scratches up your furniture, get a good scratching pad or post and place it in the area that he or she typically scratches.

Groom Pets Regularly

If your furniture or upholstery is often covered in pet hair, you may need to groom your pets more often. Professional upholstery cleaning, couch cleaning, and carpet cleaning services will thoroughly remove pet hair from carpeting and furniture, which will in turn reduce household allergens and indoor pollution. You can minimize pet hair buildup between upholstery cleaning and carpet cleaning services by grooming your pet regularly. Regular grooming removes excess hair and dander so that your pet will shed less in your home.

Protect Furniture from Stains and Spills

Accidents happen, and your pet may urinate or defecate on your furniture or carpeting. Pets are also sometimes guilty of knocking cups over, causing spills. The good news is that you can protect your furniture and carpeting from upholstery stains and carpet stains. Buy a waterproof furniture cover for chairs and sofas, or train your pets to stay off of your furniture. You can also ask a professional carpet cleaning company about stain-resistant carpeting, or carpet sprays that will protect your carpet from stains.

DIY Spot and Stain Carpet Cleaning Tips

Life doesn’t go easy on carpet. Spills and stains are destined to find their way to your carpet, and often times, at the worst possible moment. Like say, a week after you’ve had a professional carpet cleaning, or right before a dinner party. Yep, it’s a sad reality, but sometimes there’s just no time to call Drycon of Middle Tennessee for a professional carpet cleaning.

Fortunately, if you maintain your carpet with regular vacuuming and professional carpet cleaning, you can likely handle an emergency spot cleaning.  Check out the following tips for cleaning spots and stains.

1-     TREAT STAINS IMMEDIATELY – The longer a substance is on the carpet, the better chance it has of becoming a permanent stain. The clock is ticking!

2-     USE A WHITE CLOTH/RAG – The last thing we want is to add to the stain, by color-transfer from a colored cloth. A white wash cloth or shop towel will work.

3-     DAB AND BLOT. AVOID SCRUBBING. – Scrubbing a stain can easily drive the substance deeper into the carpet fiber and can spread the stain. Using your clean, white cloth, and working from the outside of the stain towards the center, blot or dab the area to remove as much of the substance as possible before using any type of carpet cleaner.

4-     SPOT TEST ANY CLEANING PRODUCTS YOU USE – Most store bought carpet cleaners are perfectly color-safe, but better safe than sorry. Test your product in a small, out of the way area to make sure it doesn’t cause any discoloration of your carpet.

5-     ONLY USE ONE TYPE OF STAIN REMOVER AT A TIME – Most of our carpet cleaning customers have some type of store bought carpet cleaners in their home. For a list of homemade carpet cleaners, check out Real Simple’s guide here. Most all carpet cleaners can be effective, but sometimes they don’t play nicely together. Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly before using a different carpet cleaning solution.

6-     RINSE THOROUGHLY – After cleaning spots and stains with your carpet cleaner, be sure to rinse the area with water and dab dry with a clean, white rag. Not doing so will leave behind a residue and potentially a new stain.

7-     BOOK A PROFESSIONAL CARPET CLEANING – Regular carpet cleaning by Drycon of Middle Tennessee will not only take care of spots and stains, but also help you get the most life out of your carpet.

Two Ways to Prolong the Life of Your Carpet

New carpet is expensive, so naturally we are all looking for ways to prolong carpet life in our homes. Fortunately, doing so isn’t complicated, but it does require a couple of things…

Vacuum Frequently! (…no really, vacuum a lot ;)

I know, no one enjoys vacuuming, BUT it is the most important single thing a homeowner can do to prolong the life and beauty of their carpet. Vacuuming your carpet removes dry soil particulates that work itself deep into your carpet. This is abrasive and damaging to the fibers of your carpet. This wear and tear causes traffic patterns to develop and can result in carpet that looks dull and worn. Removing this soil through frequent vacuuming protects your carpet fibers from this abrasion and keeps your carpet from wearing down, keeping it looking new. Vacuuming also keeps soil and dust particulates from adhering to any sticky residue that may be in the carpet fiber.

***We get asked all the time for our professional opinion on vacuum cleaners, and our answer is always the same: The best vacuum cleaner is the one you don’t mind getting out of the closet and using! Don’t be too worried about finding the perfect model with all sorts of attachments. They’re useful, but not as useful as simply vacuuming your carpet regularly.

Regularly Schedule a Professional Carpet Cleaning

No matter how much we vacuum, spots and stains are going to happen. For this reason, we recommend scheduling Drycon Carpet Cleaning every 6-12 months, depending on your home’s traffic and wear. Our deep-scrub, dry bonnet method will lift dirt, dust, hair, etc. from deep in the carpet fiber, and will leave your carpets free of residue and almost completely dry. Once we finish with our grooming process, the carpet pile will be lifted and will be ready to serve your family for many months.

All-Natural Cleaning Tips

Everyone wants to keep their family healthy, but some cleaners have harsh chemicals that can be harmful.

Drycon Carpet Cleaning of Middle Tennessee recommends a few easy and practical natural cleaning tips for your home.

Lemons

You know the old saying, "When life gives you lemons, clean your counter tops!" Use lemons to clean your counter tops by cutting the lemon in half and dipping the lemon in baking soda.  Rub the lemon on your counter tops and wipe away with warm water and a sponge.  Lemons are also a great way to clean dishes, faucets and cutting boards and mixing lemon juice with cream of tartar is an inexpensive way to clean grout that has been stained by everyday use.

Cooking Oils

Vegetable oil, olive oil and sunflower oil can be used to diminish scratches and imperfections in the wood in your home.  Use olive or vegetable oil combined with equal parts lemon juice to make your own furniture polish.  To make your stainless-steel surfaces sparkle and shine, use the oil as a polish and buff.

Vinegar

Vinegar’s acidic traits work wonders in cleaning mold, mildew and even some bacteria.  Use vinegar and warm water to clean just about anything including tubs, showers and even tile amd hardwood floors.  Be sure to follow proper vinegar to water ratios for cleaning specific items. You can find hundreds of vinegar based cleanser ideas online.

8 Tips for Maintaining Your Hardwood Floors

It’s spring time in Middle Tennessee, and warmer weather means kids and pets bringing dirt into your home.  To keep your hardwood floors looking their best, follow these 8 easy tips from Drycon of Middle Tennessee.

  1. Wipe spills up immediately.  Accidents are inevitable, but be sure to clean spills quickly to limit staining.
  2. Place a mat at outside entrances to reduce the amount of dirt and moisture tracked into your home.  Limiting the debris brought in can help preserve your hardwood floors.
  3. Keep your pet’s nails trimmed.  This helps to avoid damage from scratches.
  4. Avoid cleaners that have ammonia, detergents, bleach, polishes, oil soaps, abrasive cleaning soaps, or acidic materials.
  5. Sweep, dust and vacuum your hardwood floors regularly, at least once per week.
  6. Protect your hardwood floors from direct sunlight.  Direct sunlight can cause discoloration and warping.
  7. Use protective padding under the legs of furniture on your hardwoods. Replace hard, narrow furniture rollers with wide rubber rollers.
  8. Protect high-traffic areas with area rugs.  This will help decrease the damage caused by normal wear and tear to your hardwood floors.
